Nine families of the indigenous community “Embera Katio,” an ethnic group on the edge of extinction, that were living in San Juan de Losada, two and a half hours from San Vicente, arrived 20 days ago at the city centre, adding to the stream of unemployed and needy. Six months ago, another thirty indigenous families of the “Páez” community, who were living on a parcel of land given to them by INCORA in the decade of the 70’s in Yaguara II, at the edge of the Rio Tunia in Meta, were displaced. The security chief, don Escolástico Ducuara, 87 years of age, was kidnapped and as of this date there is no news of him.

The Christians for Peace Foundation last week distributed food for the indigeous people and together with the community of San Vicente worked to help them, especially the girls and boys that find themselves in precarious conditions of health and nutricion. A site is being prepared, with the help of the city, to provide them with a daily lunch. From Bogotá medicines and other articles that can help them are being brought, even though it might only be a temporary measure, to mitigate a little their precarious situation.

Melva Olaya who was a teacher for three years in this same community in San Juan de Losada indicated by telephone to the president of the foundation that the saddest things for her was to see so much infant mortality of girls and boys that never reached two years of age because they died of malnutricion. San Vicente has a very high social deficit, while on the other hand, the budget for the war is in the billions.
